John Hillcoat – Director

Having recently attended a Directors Q&A after a special screening of Triple 9, we thought it only right to hit the director up himself with our insightful questions!

1. As a child you wanted to be…

Not an astronaut but a painter.

2. Describe a brief synopsis for the movie of your life?

I was born, left Oz when I was 4 and landed amongst turbulent times in New Haven in the mid to late 60’s – attended Newport Folk festival and Martin L King’s funeral march and was babysat by Fred Harris at the Black Panther headquarters.

Retreated to Canada where my family took in draft-dodgers until robbed of everything by a professional acting as one. Started early career as an artist while trying to navigate violent gangs in high-school then returned to Oz slamming straight into the post-punk explosion there.

Moved into making music videos and eventually films. Roamed the planet living 1/3 my life in Oz, 1/3 North America, 1/3 UK.

It is vast, it’s dramatic… well, maybe melodramatic and a bit art-house at times.

3. What fires you up…

Many things. Great company, great music, great books, great films, great actors… And that is just the beginning.

4. Three cities you love and why…

Brighton – crumbling grandeur of the British Empire by the sea.

Tangiers – I had my honeymoon there with my best friends & family.

Hong Kong – energetic mix of harbor activity, hills and everything packed together.

5. Last meal on earth…

Quality pizza, quality pasta, dark chocolate, coffee and red wine.

6. Advice to your teenage self…

Your intense anxiety will eventually calm down into everyday adult anxiety.

7. Secret skill…

Lateral non-linear thinking via severe dose of dyslexia.

8. What do you eat for breakfast usually…

Some fresh dates & raw almonds if I don’t have time for oats – which is most of the time.

9. First record you bought…

David Bowie (since my parents covered me on Dylan, Blues, Country, Folk, the Stones & Beatles etc).

10. Favourite cliché…

The truth sets you free & There is nothing to fear but fear itself.

11. Are you an optimist or pessimist…

Both of course – Just think of birth. Then just think of death. Both are big dramatic, undeniable, and unavoidable facts.

12. Style icon…

Warhol & Bowie & Lou Reed.

13. Your favourite movie villain…

Too many to name. Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter is one. The devil in the first half of Exorcist is another.

14. Tech essential…

Anything that plays music.

15. Most underrated virtue in a person…

Basic kindness is the most important of all.

16. And the most overrated…

Chastity.

17. You’re inspired by people who…

Are originals.

18. Your best quality…

Unrelenting persistence.

19. And your worst…

Unrelenting self-loathing.

20. We are in a bar, what are you drinking…

Glass, or bottle, of Pinot Noir.

21. One thing that would make your life better…

More time.

22. Philosophy…

Existentialist in a humanist overcoat.

23. Worst job you’ve ever done…

Wading through 3 days of Casino garbage in Vegas & a parking lot attendant in Hamilton Ontario Canada.

24. Last film that you watched…

Legend – just to check out the mighty Tom Hardy in action.

25. Career plan B/C/D…

Try to make more films more frequently. Try out TV. Vary up the genres. Find more female driven material & sneakily return to painting/collage.

26. Favourite film soundtrack…

Bob Dylan’s ‘Pat Garret & Billy the Kid.’

27. Four actors you’d like to see in a film together and the genre…

Too many answers for this – it is an endless Rubik’s cube.

28. Film which disappointed you the most…

Sorry – too many to mention.

29. Film you would most like have been involved with…

Sorry – too many to mention!

You can catch John’s most recent picture, Triple 9 now while it’s still in cinemas. Review to come soon!
